At about 3:30pm quite a few us piled into the bus and headed north on the Merredin Road in search of the ‘dwarf blackboy’ – although it is probably not politically correct to use either of those terms! After much searching, our chief investigator and driver Peter Pascoe eventually spotted spotted one. We decided to rename it the ‘vertically challenged grass tree’!
After that we jumped back in the bus as the flies were getting up our noses and headed west along the Wildflower Drive while making low passes of various species from the bus. We completed our plant identification looking through the windows of the bus and remaining safe from the flies!
From there we headed back into town on the Doodli Road (aka the Doodlakine Road) – and heard some hair-raising stories from John Urbaniak and others who used to ride their bikes out this way and get up to mischief – or later tried to crash their VC Valiant at high speed. If these roads could talk!
We also did a ‘low pass’ of a few highlights of the town on the way back to the shire hall – like the original primary school site where many of us started in 1960.
We say thanks to Peter Pascoe for putting his heavy vehicle driving experience to good use when piloting the bus both to Ardath and on this trip.
